Neonatal and Infant FEES Course

Description

An intermediate level course for the creation and implementation of a multidisciplinary neonatal and infant fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) program. This is not an advanced FEES course. This course will also include an overview of neonatal therapy practice.

Participants will receive three days of didactic education, infant FEES video interpretation, and an opportunity for interactive role play to perform a bottle and breastfeeding FEES procedure with an infant simulation doll and FEES equipment. The post course offering will include hands-on training in passing and handling the endoscope safely and effectively. The participants in the post course will be performing endoscopy on each other.

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
  • Define neonatal therapy and theories of practice
  • Apply the F.E.N.N.S. framework for infant and neonatal feeding
  • Evaluate anatomical and physiologic abnormalities viewed endoscopically that contribute to infant dysphagia and determine appropriate recommendations
  • Summarize FEES literature for the adult, pediatric and neonatal populations
  • Distinguish clinical indications for neonatal VFSS and FEES
  • State the procedure for neonatal and infant bottlefeeding and breastfeeding FEES
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal swallowing parameters identified during neonatal and infant FEES
  • Incorporate the key components in order to implement a neonatal and infant FEES program

Jenny Reynolds MS CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLC, CNT

Advanced Clinical Specialist

Jenny is a neonatal speech therapist currently practicing as an Advanced Clinical Specialist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Jenny developed several programs at Baylor Medical Center as the supervisor of the critical care and speech therapy team for over ten years. Jenny is the co-founder of an innovative FEES program in the NICU. Her research publications have been in dysphagia. Jenny serves on the Texas Speech Hearing Association Professional Services Counselor. Jenny is a member of the NANT professional collaborative. She is an adjunct lecturer at UT Dallas, Texas Women’s University, and University of North Texas Speech Therapy graduate programs. Outside of work, Jenny serves in her community as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

Chrysty Sturdivant OTR, CLC, CNT

Advanced Clinical Specialist

Chrysty Sturdivant is a neonatal occupational therapist currently practicing as Advanced Clinical Specialist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Chrysty is a member of the National Association of Neonatal Therapist, operates as Vice President for NANT as well as the conference co-chair and is a member of the NANT professional collaborative. She is one of the mentors for the IGNITE and LAUNCH programs offered by NANT. Chrysty is also the recipient of the NANT Pioneer Award.

Sandra Carroll OTR, CLC, CNT

Rehab Supervisor: Neonatal Therapy Team

Early in her career as an occupational therapist, Sandra Carroll was able to align her passion with her job. Through a series of divine interventions, she dedicated time and energy in order to become a national expert in neonatal therapy. Sandra has held certification in areas such as neonatal massage, car seat safety, developmental care, and lactation counseling. Her knowledge and expertise led to the creation of successful neonatal therapy programs in dozens of NICUs across the country. She is currently employed at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where she is fortunate to practice within a team of her beloved colleagues. One of her most significant contributions to neonatal medicine has been her innovative involvement with the development of a neonatal FEES program, which has included publication of groundbreaking research. Sandra is active in NANT as a clinical consultant and a mentor for NANT’s popular “Ignite” program. She has other titles such as entrepreneur, researcher, visionary, and leader. However, the titles of wife and mother are the ones she holds closest to her heart.

Romaine Johnson MD

Pediatric Otolaryngologist (ENT)

Dr. Johnson is a pediatric otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat physician) who specializes in caring for patients with airway conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, vocal cord paralysis and subglottic stenosis (narrowing of the airway). At Children’s Health, Dr. Johnson serves as the director of the Airway Management Program where he leads a multidisciplinary team of gastroenterologists, surgeons, pulmonologist, respiratory therapists, nurses and speech-language pathologists. He uses minimally invasive procedures to treat airway conditions that affect a child’s ability to breathe, speak and eat. Dr. Johnson also performs advanced airway reconstruction for the most complex conditions. Dr. Johnson is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the director of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship program. He earned his medical degree at Drexel University School of Medicine (formerly MCP Hahnemann). He completed an otolaryngology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as a pediatric fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Johnson also received a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Johnson is a Fellow of the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society (The Triological Society); the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS); and the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, the American Broncho-Esophagological Association, and the National Medical Association. Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on the treatment of pediatric airway disorders as well as public health initiatives. He has authored nearly 60 scientific articles and book chapters and has delivered numerous national presentations, lectures, and professional courses. Dr. Johnson has won several awards for his outstanding research, including the Herbert Silverstein Otology/ Neurotology Research Award from the AAO-HNS, the J. Charles Dickson Award for Outstanding Research from the Kelsey Research Foundation, and the Dallas Otology Foundation Award for Resident Research. He also serves as an Associate Editor of Pediatric Otolaryngology for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as a reviewer for The Laryngoscope.

Mustafa Suterwala MD

Pediatric Hospitalist

Dr. Suterwala is a pediatrics specialist in Dallas, TX and has been practicing for over 21 years. He graduated from U Bombay in 1987 and specializes in pediatrics. He currently is employed by MEDNAX and works at Baylor University Medical Center in the NICU and also at TOTS clinic with outpatient NICU graduates and medically complex children.

Audrey Anderson MS, CCC-SLP

Speech Language Pathologist

Audrey received her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas in 2011. She is certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and licensed by the State of Texas. She has worked for Baylor Scott and White Institute for Rehabilitation for the last six years with experience across the medical continuum in the acute, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of adults with communication and swallowing disorders. Her clinical interests include head and neck cancer, trach/vent and traumatic brain injury. She is trained in MDTP (McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program), total laryngectomy rehabilitation, videofluoroscopy and FEES (fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing). She has served as a Clinical Fellow supervisor and presented at the Texas Speech and Hearing Association Annual Convention in 2016.

Rachel Bliss MS, CCC-SLP

Speech Language Pathologist

Rachel is a Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in evaluation and treatment of speech, language and swallow disorders in the adult patient population. She has been employed in the acute care hospital setting since her graduation from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2008. She now is a Speech Pathologist on staff at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Rachel is MBSImP certified and a McNeil Dysphagia Therapy Program provider.

Miranda Browning MS CCC-SLP, BCS-S

Senior Speech Language Pathologist

Miranda is an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist currently practicing at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. She received her board certification in swallowing and swallowing disorders (BCS-S) in 2017. Her clinical interests include dysphagia in the adult cardiopulmonary population and feeding difficulty in infants with craniofacial anomalies.

Kim Ellis PT

Neonatal Physical Therapist

Kim is a Neonatal Physical Therapist currently practicing at Baylor Scott and White in McKinney Texas. She graduated with her Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2004, and completed her Neonatal Therapy Certificate in 2005 from UTMB. Kim started her career at Children's Medical Center in Dallas Tx in 2005. She practiced in acute care, specializing in Neonatal ICU, Cardiac ICU, and Hematology/Oncology. Kim moved to Baylor Scott and White - McKinney in 2013 where she is currently employed in the NICU. She provides evaluation and treatment for premature and medically complex infants.

Sondra Hart RN

NICU Nurse

Sondra is from Dallas, TX. She began her career at Baylor University Medical Center in as registered nurse in the NICU. Sondra has been part of several feeding initiatives at Baylor, including cue-based feeding and assisting with bottle and breastfeeding FEES. She is an integral member in the BUMC FEES program and is passionate about safe and nurturing feedings about the patients and families she cares for.

Rachel King MS, CCC-SLP

Speech Language Pathologist

Rachel has worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist since finishing graduate school in 2011. She completed her CFY at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. She moved to Dallas in 2012, when she began working at Baylor University Medical Center. Rachel continues to be employed by Baylor University Medical Center as a PRN SLP and also works for a mobile FEES company that she co-founded. Rachel has experience working in the acute care setting with neuro, cardiopulmonary, head and neck cancer, and neonatal patients.

Diane Longnecker MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S

Diane is an ASHA certified Speech Pathologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. She received her board certification in swallowing and swallowing disorders (BCS-S) in 2012. She currently serves as the Advanced Clinical Specialist for the Speech Pathology department at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Interests beyond her clinical duties include staff education, standardization of clinical practice, and presenting at the local, state and national level.

Caren Michel OTR, CNT

Staff Neonatal Therapist

Caren Michel has been practicing as an occupational therapist since 1987 after graduating from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She carries the privilege of being employed by Baylor for her entire career. Caren’s background includes being an expert in the treatment of patients with spinal cord injuries, in the acute and rehabilitation phases, from neonate to elderly. As a certified neonatal therapist, Caren brings her passion for caring for high-risk families to the bedside. Caren is a proud mother to three adult children, a grandmother and wife.

Lindsay Newland BSN, RN, IBCLC

Baylor Scott & White Health Lactation Team

Lindsay is from Dallas, TX where she obtained her Bachelors in Nursing in December 2001. She began her career at Baylor University Medical Center in January of 2002 as registered nurse in the NICU. Lindsay obtained certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2007 after developing a passion for assisting moms with feeding their premature infants, and continues her work in the NICU as lactation consultant. Lindsay has been part of several feeding initiatives at Baylor, including cue-based feeding and assisting with breastfeeding FEES. She is currently perusing her Master’s degree in Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Texas Woman’s University, in hopes of continuing to work with previous NICU infant with feeding difficulties. Outside of work, Lindsay prides herself as wife and mother of three. Her hobbies include yoga and kayaking.

Caroline Nickel MS, CCC-SLP

Caroline is the supervisor of the Speech Pathology department at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. In addition to her clinical activities, she has presented at the state and national level on a variety of topics including optimizing value of speech pathology services in the acute care setting and palliative care.

Vanessa received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M Univserity in 1993. She received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and received the Clinical Excellence Award in 1996. Vanessa currently works at Baylor All Saints Medical Center as a Senior Physical Therapists specializing in neonatal therapies in the ICU.

Ronnee Pace MS, CCC-SLP, IBCLC

Speech Language Pathologist

Ronnee received her BS in Communication Disorders in 2001 from Texas Christian University and her MS in Communication Disorders in 2003 from the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a certified lacation consultant by IBLCE and NTNCB. Ronnee works in various locations as a PRN Speech-Language Pathologist. Her goal is to provide treatment in neonatal ICU setting involving breastfeeding, feeding disorders, swallowing deficits, and oral-motor deficits with premature and term infants.

Lyndsay Parker MS, CCC-SLP

Speech Language Pathologist

Lyndsay received her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma and her Master’s degree from The University of Texas – Dallas. She went into her graduate program thinking that she would specialize in pediatrics, but it only took one clinical experience for her to realize that her true calling is working with adults. She has worked across the medical continuum in acute care, inpatient rehab, and outpatient. Lyndsay participated in a Carolina Speech Pathology course during her initial FEES training in 2013 and is thrilled to have since become a part of the Carolina Speech team. Lyndsay takes dining out, cooking, and good food very seriously – which are big reasons why she loves helping others with their eating and swallow function!

Brittany is a certified Speech Pathologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. She graduated from Baylor University with a M.S. in Communication Sciences Disorders in 2013. She currently is a senior therapist at Baylor University Medical Center. Primary patient populations served in treatment and evaluation are the cardiopulmonary, stroke, and neonatal intensive care patients where she received specialized training in objective swallow studies (MBSS, FEES). Whitney is an ASHA certified Speech Pathologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology in 2013. She currently is a senior therapist at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth. Primary patient populations served include head and neck cancer, cardiopulmonary, stroke, and neonatal intensive care. Whitney has received specialized training in objective swallow studies (MBSS and FEES) in both the adult and infant populations.

NICU Professional Development Educator

Lisa Stone is a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She began her career in nursing 20 years ago as a Critical Care Nurse in the Liver Kidney Transplant ICU at BUMC. She has been in the NICU for 15 years, and has served as the NICU Professional Development Educator for the last 8 years. Lisa received her BSN at Abilene Christian University in 1997 and is currently enrolled in the Masters in Nursing Education program at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Kristin Taylor MS, OTR, CIMI, CLC, CNT

Senior Neonatal Therapist

Kristin is a Neonatal Occupational Therapist currently practicing as a Clinical Specialist in the NICU at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth. She began her career working with adults in both acute care and inpatient rehab, but she found her passion when she started in the NICU in 2006. Kristin is also a Certified Lactation Counselor, Neonatal Massage Therapist, presenter at national conferences and a member of NANT. Her goals are to help give the infant and their parents the tools that they need for the best outcome, to support and encourage bonding, and to guide the family to the next step. It is an honor to be a small part of the infants’ journey.
